The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain across Delhi-NCR on October 30, followed by partly cloudy skies on October 31. Conditions are expected to improve from November 1, while heavy rainfall alerts remain in place across several states.
Incessant overnight rainfall brought a sharp change in weather across Delhi-NCR, bringing down temperatures and ushering in a wintry chill.
Several parts of the capital witnessed steady showers late Thursday night, with visuals from Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station and the Jamia Millia Islamia area showing waterlogged, rain-soaked roads beneath overcast skies.
The change in weather also coincided with an improvement in Delhi’s air quality.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 133 at 4 am on Friday, falling from levels above 200 recorded on Wednesday and Thursday.
The AQI reading of 133 falls in the moderate category, compared with the poor category recorded earlier in the week.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for Delhi and neighbouring National Capital Region districts on October 29, forecasting rain and thunderstorms over the following 24 to 48 hours.
Weather activity is expected to continue across the region before conditions gradually improve at the beginning of November.
On October 29, Delhi experienced its coldest October day in four years with temperatures dropping 5.6°C below normal due to the weakening Cyclone Arnab.
RAIN, THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED ACROSS DELHI-NCR
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in New Delhi, Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad are likely to experience generally cloudy skies, with one or two spells of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Light to moderate showers are forecast for October 30, with isolated heavy rainfall possible during the night.
The weather is expected to improve on October 31, when partly cloudy skies are likely across the region. No weather warnings have been issued for that day.
From November 1, Delhi-NCR is expected to witness mainly clear skies and more stable weather conditions, with fair weather forecasts across the districts.
HEAVY RAINFALL ALERT FOR SEVERAL STATES
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast intense rainfall in parts of central and eastern India due to a remnant cyclonic circulation. North Bihar could receive isolated extremely heavy rainfall on October 30. Similar conditions are expected in parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and East Uttar Pradesh.
The weather department has issued a low-to-moderate flash flood risk alert until October 30 for vulnerable watersheds in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh.
Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious amid the possibility of heavy downpours.
SOUTHERN STATES TO SEE INCREASED RAINFALL FROM NOVEMBER 2
In southern India, rainfall activity is expected to increase from early November as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal approaches the region.
Scattered showers are likely to continue towards the end of October, followed by more widespread rainfall between November 2 and 4 across Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The IMD has forecast isolated very heavy rainfall in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on November 2 and 3. Telangana may also experience thunderstorms and thundersqualls, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph.
While Delhi-NCR is expected to see improving weather conditions from November 1, several states across central, eastern and southern India remain on alert for heavy rainfall over the coming days.
