‘They want to kill me’: Gangster Atiq Ahmed before leaving Gujarat jail

Gangster Atiq Ahmed expressed fear that he may be murdered as he was being taken to Uttar Pradesh from a jail in Gujarat on Sunday. He is to be produced before a court on March 28 in a kidnapping case.

Gangster Atiq Ahmed, who had expressed fear that he may be killed in a fake encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police, reiterated the same as he was taken from Sabarmati jail in Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on Sunday.

“Murder, murder,” Atiq Ahmed told reporters outside the Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad while being whisked away in a police vehicle by security personnel.

“Mujhe inka programme maloom hai. Hatya karna chahte hain (I know their programme. They want to murder me),” the gangster was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

A team of Uttar Pradesh Police reached the Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad city in the morning and left the premises with Atiq Ahmed amid tight security around 6 pm.

He is to be produced before a court on March 28 in a kidnapping case. He is named in more than 100 criminal cases, including the recent Umesh Pal murder case.

Atiq Ahmed has been lodged in the Sabarmati central jail since June 2019. He was shifted there from his home state as per a Supreme Court’s order.

On March 1, he moved the Supreme Court saying the Uttar Pradesh Police in all likelihood will seek his transit remand and expressed apprehension that he may be eliminated during this transit period.
