Jailed UP gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari dies of heart attack

Mukhtar Ansari, the gangster-turned-politician, died of a heart attack on Thursday evening. He was rushed to a hospital after his health deteriorated but died during treatment.

Mukhtar Ansari, the five-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau, died of cardiac arrest on Thursday evening. The gangster-politician, who was lodged in Banda district jail, was rushed to Rani Durgavati Medical College earlier this evening after his health deteriorated.

According to prison officials, 63-year-old Ansari’s health deteriorated after he broke his Ramzan fast in the evening. Doctors were first called to the jail to treat him, but he was rushed to the hospital after medics suspected he had a cardiac arrest.

He was brought to the hospital at 8.25 pm in an unconscious state. A panel of nine doctors were treating him, but he died of cardiac arrest.

The Samajwadi Party paid condolences after Mukhtar Ansari’s death. “Sad demise of former MLA Shri Mukhtar Ansari. May his soul rest in peace. May the bereaved family members get the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Humble tribute !,” Samajwadi Party said in a tweet.

Mukhtar Ansari was hospitalised for around 14 hours on Tuesday after he complained of abdominal pain. Days earlier, he told a Barabanki court that he was served food laced with poison inside the prison.

Ansari was diagnosed with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital, sources said. The doctors had advised him to undergo surgery.

Mukhtar Ansari was a former five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat and had been behind bars in UP and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. He spent two years in a Punjab prison and was brought back to the Banda jail in April 2021.

He was sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts of UP and was lodged in the Banda jail.

His name was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police last year.

Meanwhile, the police have increased vigilance in Banda and other areas, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Mau, Ghazipur. Orders have also been given to increase patrolling of the police forces in sensitive areas.
