Jalandhar: Three cops were killed and 18 injured when a police bus crashed into a truck parked on the roadside near Mukerian on the Jalandhar-Pathankot national highway on Wednesday morning. The bus was carrying police personnel from Punjab Armed Police, Jalandhar, to Gurdaspur.
The accident took place after 6 am at Ema Mangat village. There was fog but it could not be clear if the visibility was low enough to hamper driving.
Villagers from a nearby gurdwara joined the rescue. Since the front portion of the bus was stuck in the rear of the truck, the rescuers used a tractor to pull the bus wreckage away. The victims are ASI Hardev Singh Johl, constable Shallu Rana and driver Gurpreet Singh Gopi.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said families of the deceased would be given Rs 1 crore by state government and Rs 1 crore by an insurance company.
