4.9-magnitude earthquake hits Uttarakhand, tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand on Tuesday night, with tremors felt across several parts of northern India, including Delhi-NCR, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at around 10.15 pm, with its epicentre located in Chamoli. The quake was recorded at a depth of 13 km.

Tremors were felt in Delhi and NCR areas, including Noida and Gurugram and several other parts of northern India shortly after the earthquake. Residents in different areas reported feeling brief shaking.

People who took to the internet to share their experiences reported feeling tremors in cities ranging from Delhi to Shimla and several other regions.

“Felt my entire couch move, the entire building move in Safdurjung Enclave in Delhi! Never experienced anything close!,” Avani Bansal, a Supreme Court advocate, wrote on X.

People also shared visuals of residents stepping out of their apartments and gathering in open areas following the seismic activity.

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake is generally classified as a light earthquake and there were no reports of casualties or damage following the strike.

The earthquake was initially reported as measuring 4.4 magnitude, but the latest data from the National Centre for Seismology put its magnitude at 4.9.

Earlier in the day, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Nagaon at around 4.30 am, according to the seismological department.
