After Lucknow fire tragedy, UP bans coaching, business activity in basements

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a strict ban on coaching centres and all commercial activities operating from basements, in the wake of the Aliganj fire tragedy in Lucknow that killed at least 15 people and triggered widespread scrutiny of building safety violations.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued clear directions saying that basements must not be used for any form of coaching or commercial operations. He further instructed officials to ensure strict enforcement of fire safety and disaster management norms across the state.

He further warned that violations of safety standards would not be tolerated under any circumstances. All concerned departments have been directed to identify buildings where basements are being misused and take immediate corrective action. Action will also be taken against officials found negligent in enforcement.

CRACKDOWN IN LUCKNOW

The decision follows the Aliganj fire incident in Lucknow, where an illegally modified commercial complex reportedly operating in violation of approved building plans came under investigation after a devastating blaze that led to multiple casualties.

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has launched a major enforcement drive against the building and similar structures in the area. Officials have issued notices to building owners, alleging that a residential property approved in 2014 was later converted into a commercial complex without proper permission.

Preliminary findings suggest that deviations from sanctioned maps and violations of fire safety rules may have worsened the impact of the fire.

NOTICES ISSUED, DEMOLITION ACTION POSSIBLE

The LDA has given owners 15 days to respond to the notices. Authorities have warned that failure to provide satisfactory explanations could lead to demolition action under the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act.

Officials are also examining whether multiple violations, including unauthorised basement usage, contributed to the tragedy. A broader inspection of nearby buildings has also been initiated.

STATEWIDE INSPECTION DRIVE UNDERWAY

Following the incident, the state administration has intensified inspections of commercial establishments operating in residential areas, with special focus on coaching centres and basement units being used illegally.

Officials reiterated that public safety remains the top priority, and any structure found violating building norms or fire safety regulations will face strict legal action.

The investigation and enforcement drive are ongoing.
